Finding Something You Love
From Beginner to Teacher

From Beginner to Teacher
I’m a self-taught watercolor artist, and when I fell in love with watercolor, I dove in completely. I studied, practiced, experimented, made plenty of mistakes, and painted—a lot. And because being a beginner is still so fresh in my mind, I remember the questions. I remember what confused me. I remember wondering whether I was doing things “right.” And I remember the excitement when something finally clicked. That became part of the reason I wanted to teach. Through The First Bloom, I want to give beginners a comfortable, encouraging place to learn watercolor without feeling like they need to already be “artistic.” Maybe watercolor will simply be something fun they enjoy for an hour. Or maybe someone will pick up a brush and discover, as I did, "Oh. There you are. This is the thing I love."
Either outcome is pretty wonderful.
Finding Joy in the Little Things
I’m drawn to flowers, tiny creatures, animals, whimsical scenes, and ordinary little bits of beauty that are easy to pass by without noticing. Perhaps that’s because watercolor has taught me to notice more—not only what’s around me, but what brings me joy. My hope for Jenn DiLucia Art is bigger than simply making pretty paintings. I hope my art encourages people to slow down and notice the beauty God has placed in the ordinary. And through teaching, I hope I can encourage someone else to make a little room in their life for creativity, curiosity, and joy.
He hath made every thing beautiful in his time...
Ecclesiastes 3:11 (KJV)
If you haven’t found your thing yet, keep looking. It isn’t too late.
Hi, I'm Jenn.
For most of my life, I was busy doing what needed to be done—raising a family, caring for the people I love, working, and moving from one responsibility to the next. Somewhere along the way, I never really found my thing. Then, at 51 years old, I found watercolor. It’s difficult to explain what that discovery has meant to me. This is the first thing in my life that I can genuinely say I love to do. Not something I have to do. Not something I’m doing for someone else. Something I look forward to, think about when I’m not doing it, and can happily spend hours doing. Watercolor came into my life during a season when I needed to slow down and begin taking care of myself, too. What started with a brush, some paint, and a piece of paper became a source of peace, purpose, curiosity, and joy. I’m deeply grateful for the way God used something as simple as painting to bring beauty and hope into that season of my life.
Finding Something You Love
I think that’s one of the biggest things watercolor has taught me—and it has nothing to do with painting. It's never too late to discover something you love. We can spend so much of our lives taking care of responsibilities and taking care of other people that we forget we are people who need tending, too. Making time for something that brings you joy isn’t frivolous. Sometimes it’s part of taking care of the person God created you to be. I wish I had understood that sooner. But also, I don’t believe I found watercolor too late. I found it when I was ready for it.
